Ovens and Stovetops

Why does my oven turn off by itself?

Some ovens shut off after a set time, so check for a timer, delay or Sabbath mode setting first. If those are clear, a thermal fuse or control board is the usual cause. Do not keep restarting it.

Is it safe to use an oven with cracked door glass?

No. Cracked glass can shatter when it heats up. Turn the oven off, let it cool and call for a repair. Do not use self clean.

Can I recalibrate my oven temperature myself?

Many ovens let you adjust the temperature offset in the control menu. Your manual shows how. If an oven is off by a lot, the sensor is usually the problem, not the setting.

Why does my stovetop burner keep clicking?

Moisture or food on the burner cap keeps the igniter sparking. Turn the burner off, let it dry, and set the cap back in place. If it still clicks, the igniter or switch may need replacing.

Refrigerators and Freezers

Why is water leaking under my refrigerator?

A clogged defrost drain or a loose water line to the ice maker or dispenser is the usual cause. Pull the fridge out slightly and look at the drain pan and the line behind it.

Why is my refrigerator so loud?

A steady hum is normal. A rattle or buzz usually points to a fan hitting frost or debris. Loud clicking or a motor that starts and stops points to the compressor or start relay.

What temperature should my refrigerator and freezer be?

The FDA says to keep the refrigerator at 40°F or below and the freezer at 0°F. A cheap appliance thermometer tells you the truth faster than the dial.

How long will food last in the fridge during a power outage?

The FDA says a closed refrigerator keeps food safe for about 4 hours. A full freezer holds its temperature for about 48 hours, or 24 hours if it is half full. Keep the doors shut.

How often should I clean the condenser coils?

Once or twice a year. Dust on the coils makes the compressor work harder. Unplug the fridge, then vacuum the coils with a brush attachment.

Washers and Dryers

Why does my washer shake or walk across the floor?

The load is usually unbalanced or the machine is not level. Adjust the feet until it sits firm. If it still shakes empty, worn suspension parts may be the cause.

Why does my washing machine smell musty?

Mildew grows in the door gasket and detergent drawer, mostly on front load washers. Wipe the gasket, leave the door open after use, and run a cleaning cycle monthly with high efficiency detergent.

How often should I clean my dryer vent?

At least once a year, and more often with a long vent run or a big family. The National Fire Protection Association lists failure to clean as the leading cause of dryer fires.

Dishwashers

Why are my dishes cloudy after a wash cycle?

Hard water film or too much detergent is the usual cause. Use less detergent, add rinse aid and run a cleaner cycle. Etching, a permanent cloudiness, cannot be removed.

Why does my dishwasher smell bad?

Trapped food in the filter or the drain is the usual cause. Pull the filter, rinse it, wipe the door seal and run a hot cleaning cycle.

Visits, Parts and Warranties

How should I get ready for the technician?

Clear a path to the appliance and pull it out if you can do so safely. For a built-in oven, empty it. Keep pets in another room. Have the model number and any error code handy.

Should someone be home during the repair?

Yes. Someone needs to show us the appliance, approve the price and see it working at the end.

What is the difference between OEM and aftermarket parts?

OEM parts are made or approved by the appliance maker and fit exactly. Aftermarket parts cost less and can work well. Ask which one is on your written estimate.

Should I use my home warranty or call you directly?

Check the plan first. Some require their own approved technician and may deny a claim if you hire someone else. If you pay out of pocket, you can pick any registered repair company.
